Welcome to the Department of the Trans-Mississippi, representing and promoting awareness of the American Civil War in the states west of the Mississippi. The Confederate Trans-Mississippi Department, the forgotten area of contention during the War Between the States. Many battles, skirmishes along with the last major invasion of the Confederate States in the war, occurred in the area west of the Mississippi River. The "modern" Trans-Mississippi Brigade brings together as an umbrella group some of the finest Civil War reenactment infantry units in the country. Although we are a Confederate Brigade, we "galvanize" to portray Federals as needed for specific events. |

1. A reminder that the emergency contact number for the event is (717)334-6111. This may be useful to leave at home, for those who may need to make contacts once participants are on site.
2. I have been asked to have you tell any of your mounted personnel, regardless of station or branch, within your respective organizations that GAC will be providing only nine (9) water troughs. I know that some of you are particular about what horses drink from your troughs, and rightly so. If you have any desire to bring your own troughs, to alleviate worry about any transmittable contagions, please label them (so yours can be easily retrieved after the event), bring them and GAC will see that they are filled.
3. And finally, (just learned this morning) I am asked to tell you that GAC finalized its published list of participants as of June 1, 2008. Substitutions may still be made, HOWEVER, ANY SUCH SUBSTITUTION MUST PAY AS A WALK-ON. This does not come from Confederate Command Staff. This comes from GAC, and I am told that this policy is firmly in place. I'm sorry if this causes any inconveniences, but it is my duty to inform you, to at least minimize surprises.
If you will please communicate this information to your military and civilaian contingents, I will be in your debt.
More definitive word will come to you, about meetings as it is made available to me.
If there is anything I can be doing for you please let me know. I will travel very early Tuesday morning and will only be available by cell phone, after midnight, Monday (540) 580-8764.
Respectfully,
Colonel Gallion

"Holding the High Ground" – Defense of Cemetery Hill
Friday, July 4th – 6:00 P.M.
After driving the Union army back through the town of Gettysburg, Confederate forces commanding the east side of town stopped short of Culp’s and East Cemetery Hill as night enveloped the battlefield. General Lee left the decision to press the July 1st attack on Culp’s Hill up to General Ewell. Since Ewell had only two brigades available and could not depend on reinforcements, he decided not to attack the Union force on the hill. Although that decision has been the subject of strong debates both pro and con, there is no doubt it gave the Union troops a greater opportunity to entrench and fortify their positions on the hill. The Cemetery Hill fighting opened at dusk on July 2nd with General Early’s division pressing from south and southeast of town and Rhodes’ division intending to attack from the town to the west. Troops from Early’s division included Brig. General Harry T. Hays with the Louisiana Tigers and Col. Isaac Avery’s North Carolinians gamely punched through weak spots in the Union line. The attackers reached the Federal guns on East Cemetery Hill and battled the Union cannoneers and troops driven from the base of the hill. Reinforcements from the Union Eleventh and Second Corps helped fill the gap and repulse Early’s assault. Unfortunately for the Confederates, Rhodes’ division was not ready for the fight until after Early’s fight was over so Rhodes’ division halted their attack on July 2nd.
The intense battle for Cemetery and Culp’s Hill during the evening and night of July 2nd was only a prelude to another ferocious Confederate assault early the next morning on July 3rd. Don’t miss the experience of this battle “Holding the High Ground” – Defense of Cemetery Hill on Friday, July 4th, 6:00 p.m. at the 145th Gettysburg Anniversary Battle Reenactment.
On To Gettysburg!!!

Commanding Hays Brigade
We need to have a good turnout for Annual Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment. When registering folks need to put you info under Organization Affiliation: Huckabee Brigade this will keep things straight for the organizers.
Also I am working with General Shoemake in trying to get us in as the 7th & 8th Louisiana I have been trying to also get to do the 3rd Arkansas but King has Hoods Division but still working on this also. This is one of the reasons we need to get everyone registered before Dec 31, from everyone I have talked to we could have around 700 in the Brigade for Gettysburg. As most of you know we have several divisions wanting us to go with them King is one of them and Cleburne's is the other after talking with several of you we have decided to go as an independent Brigade. I need each of you the Battalion commanders to give me your thoughts on this.

PEA RIDGE LIVING HISTORY EVENT
Gentlemen,
2/20/08 I just got the final information concerning the living history/reenactment to be held by the Pea Ridge National Military Park, March 7-9, 2008. It is short notice and please needs to be distributed to the troops as deemed appropiate. I will have more information at Round Mountain for those who want to know the details about why the WIG was invited instead of us. Nevertheless, we can now go through WIG and participate.
Registration is $15 and may be mailed to the group the Park originally invited, the Western Independent Grays (WIG).
The address is:
WIG-Pea Ridge 2008
P.O. Box 331
Thompson's Station TN 37179
The WIG is taking all walk-ons registered through them. All rations and provisions will be covered by the registration.
It is a shame we didn't have prior notice.
We can rise to the occasion and have much needed drill, and marching around the Park in the steps of the Soldiers who passed before, as planned by WIG. The Park hasn't allowed us to march overland in the Park since the film but the WIG got permission. This could be the best event in Pea Ridge since we made the film for the Park, a-way back when.
At the 15th's regimental meeting almost all the men wanted to participate in the anniversary of the Battle of Pea Ridge this March. I was delegated the responsibility of finding out the details for participation. We were the group asked last year, and I know the men really wanted to serve again, as represented by the hand count at the meeting. Pea Ridge is the best preserved National Park west of the Mississipi, yet it rarely gets any attention due to our Spring reenactment schedule in Oklahoma. It is also where the biggest battle occured and I feel needs to see the presence of the First Arkansas Battalion on a regular basis. In fact the hand count was almost unanimous and was voted the most desirable reenactment this year, even moreso than Gettysburg. It is on our back porch, but you'd never guess it due to a lack of involvement, mainly due to the treatment by the PRNMP.
I wanted to pass this along to the Brigade but no longer have any e-mail addresses due to a computer failure at my end. If appropriate, maybe we can pass the word along and outshine the WIG fellows. They are supposed to show up with their battalion of 150 men, about the size of our battalion. There is no galvanizing planned by the WIG so we don't have to, but the Park has continued with their rhetoric about how the Yanks will need men to wear the Blue, as always.
I look forward to serving with you in the shadows of the big oaks at the Elkhorn Tavern.
Respectfully submitted,
Your humble and obedient servant,
Stephen Bailey
Blast Kills Civil War Relics Dealer
Tuesday, February 19, 2008
RICHMOND, Va. — A man who sold Civil War relics that included munitions was killed by an explosion, and residents of the neighborhood were kept out of their homes Tuesday as experts looked for more explosives.
Samuel H. White, 53, was found in his backyard Monday by neighbors who had heard the blast, Chesterfield County police said. Police Capt. Steve Neal said that what exploded was military ordnance, possibly dating from the Civil War. Authorities found unexploded military ordnance at his house, and on Tuesday they were still collecting and detonating explosives. White's business, Sam White Relics, advertised various relics for sale including Civil War artillery shells, cannonballs and bullets. His web site says he would "disarm, clean, and preserve your Civil War period and earlier military ordnance" for about $35 each.
About two dozen nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution and police spokeswoman Ann Reid said the evacuation would remain in effect indefinitely. Neighbor Brian Dunkerly told the Richmond Times-Dispatch the explosion hurled a chunk of metal weighing about 15 pounds that struck the roof of his front porch about one-quarter-mile from White's house. He said no one was hurt, although the piece of metal shattered his glass front door, hit the floor inside and bounced to the ceiling before coming to rest in the center of his living room.
